The original version of MGMT‘s “Your Life Is a Lie” is joyous and minimal with a cowbell serving as its metronome, even though the lyrics deliver the sting of dismal paranoia. But for this Sunroof Remix, Daniel Miller (the founder of Mute Records) and Gareth Jones (a producer who has worked with Depeche Mode) have given the song a warm, synth-heavy glow. The track keeps its cheerful chord progression, but the cowbell is subbed out for a drum machine and the original’s more abrasive instrumentals have been smoothed over. Miller and Jones’ synth drive easily recalls the work of Giorgio Moroder and, appropriately, the Mute catalog. Instead of capping the song at two minutes (like the original), this version stretches out for an additional five, offering a heady, spaced out detour in the middle and some quiet, buzzing minimalism during the outro.
